Monetarily, what's the price breakdown between buying produce in the store vs. growing it at home? (Not including labor and initial equipment costs but just water and electricity.) I live in the desert and I might not be able to afford an outdoor garden due to the water bill!

Once you get initial equipment the cost is very low…especially if you can learn to use newer more efficient lighting technology. Water usage is very low compared to traditional growing.To run my entire growroom with the LED and Floros. (~600w) My electricity bill at 9C per KWH is only about 25 dollars higher per month than before I started. I use approx 50 gallons to all my reserviors and I do this every 3-4 weeks. Although I do use RO water and that is a pretty wasteful process. But If you had decent Tap water (250ppm or lower) the filtration isn't nessasary. I just live in the middle of Houston and don't trust the water quality.This is one of the main reason we say "Pioneer distributed urban agriculture" If you can get 10 people to each grow one crop in a 4×4 area and learn how to maximize that yield from 200-300w a co-op could be very cost efficient not to mention enjoyable.

$25 per month for how many vegetables? It sounds great, BTW! I'm just thinking frugally… Can't beat home-grown, but some people will be thinking about a cost comparison between this and the grocery store.
