I am teacher, photographer and metformin hcl 850 documentary film maker. I am interested in ideas and projects that will inspire change in our world. I am interested in hydroponics and aquaponics as I believe it is one of the viable solutions to feeding the world with the least amount of ecological impact. The World Health Organization stated that they consider hydroponics to be the most important subject to be studied in the new millennium, as it is the only way to feed the world and do so in an environmentally friendly way.
It takes 1000 Litres or 264.172 Gallons of water to produce 1 pound of dry produce in current agricultural practices. Hydroponics and Aquaponics uses between 90 to 99% less water! Some analysts have stated that we are past peak oil and this is concerning as our modern agricultural model is based off of oil. The pesticides, fungicides, and herbicides are all petroleum based. The planting, maintenance, harvesting, packaging, and shipping of our foods are all based on oil. If peak oil is true, then we will be seeing inflation on food. My solution to this is called Urban Farming! Lets teach and inspire the world to shift the way we are currently growing our food. The photo below is an example of how I am integrating hydroponics into my classroom for my grade 10 to 12 students. They are experiencing hands on learning in science and biology by being able to study the life cycle of plants. They are learning about business through agriculture as we are currently selling edible produce to the community to raise money for our projects. I am also in the process of developing agriculture courses that the students can receive credit for. Stay tuned for tests that I am running with my students and for some of the projects that I have running at home.
